【From P's Room】Junior High Entrance Ceremony 2017 : Principal's Speech

Parents of a junior high school freshman (G7)

Thank you very much for coming to the entrance ceremony today.

The students’ expressive eyes and hopeful expressions were very wonderful.

I would like to support the growth of AMICUS students with you.

The principal’s message of the entrance ceremony, I will introduce only the English part.

Good Morning, ladies and gentlemen, honorable guests and all those who are kindly gathered here for the AMICUS Junior High entrance ceremony. I would like to extend my hearty thanks to all of you for your attendance.

Welcome, new students of AMICUS Junior High. “Learning” begins in junior high starting today.

I came to AMICUS this April. I feel like a freshman just like you.

There is something I want you to engrave deeply into your heart.

“Learning” at AMICUS means “Gakumon”, not “Benkyo”.

I think that you can understand the meaning if you write it in kanji, “Benkyo” is studying, it means “to correctly memorize”. It is to be accepted from others. “Gakumon” is learning, it means “to learn and ask questions” on your own.

“What” is important in 21st century education? I believe it is not a new “learning” method.

What is useful for living?
How is it connected to society?
Is that really true?

It is very important to think of those “questions” to yourself, and ask friends and teachers.

In pursuing a meaningful school life, I would like to suggest this important thing. Develop different ways of thinking and create your own opinions.

There is no right answer to what happens in the world. While looking at a wide variety of ideas, we have to find the best solution thru discussion.

There are many problems to be solved in the world. You have to solve those problems.

I would like you to have a strong mind to connect the earth to the next generation. Look for “what” and “how” you can contribute to “learning” at AMICUS.

“Why do you learn?”
Let’s work hard together to face this “question”, to uplift ourselves and improve the world.

I wish you the best. Congratulations, new students!
