【EL】G5 Volunteer Weeding of Invasive Alien Plants

The 5th graders went to Okinawa Zoo & Museum for their field trip.

The main event of the day was to volunteer to remove non-native plants from the grounds!

First, Mr. Takamine of Okinawa Zoo & Museum explained how to weed out invasive plants such as Mikania micrantha and Ipomoea cairica, and then the students actually tried weeding them.

The fifth graders worked very hard for about two hours!

The children, who have been learning about invasive alien species in science class, became aware of the problem by actually seeing the species inhabiting in Okinawa.

After the volunteer work, they had a tour of the zoo.

They enjoyed learning about the zoo and animals there through a quiz rally!
