【EL】G5 Field Trip: Fisheries in Okinawa

The fifth graders are learning about the fishing industry in social studies.

As part of their study, they visited the bonito flakes factory in the Motobu Town Fishermen’s Association and the Ocean Culture Museum in the Ocean Expo Park.

At the bonito flakes factory, they saw machines used to cut bonito flakes, fishing nets and other tools used in fishing.

The children were also surprised to see mozuku seeds for the first time.

They seemed to be very interested in Mr. Nakasone’s talk who was from the fishermen’s union, about the qualifications to become a fisherman and the challenges facing the fishery industry in Okinawa.

They were also delighted to buy some souvenirs on their way home!

At the Oceanic Culture Museum, the children were able to learn about the maritime culture of not only Okinawa but also other countries in Oceania through various exhibits.

The Fijian teacher also explained to the children about the lifestyle of the Fijian people and they were able to deepen their learning.
