JSL Online Exchange with Tsuken Elementary and Junior High School

At AMICUS Elementary School, we offer a JSL (Japanese as a Second Language) class for students whose first language is not Japanese, providing support to help them improve their Japanese language skills.

This time—guess what!
We held an online exchange session with students from Tsuken Elementary and Junior High School on Tsuken Island, together with representative students from our JSL class!

During the exchange, students introduced their schools and local communities to one another.
The students from Tsuken Elementary and Junior High School gave their presentations in English, while the AMICUS students presented in Japanese!

Everyone was surprised to discover that Tsuken Island’s local products—carrots, mozuku seaweed, and mulberries—are the same as those found on Okinawa’s main island.
“Wow! They’re the same as Okinawa!” the children exclaimed in excitement!

Although the students were a little nervous at first, the question-and-answer session quickly became lively.
Questions such as “When did you come to Okinawa?” and “Where are you from?” were followed by “What’s your favorite food?”—and the room was soon filled with smiles and enthusiasm!

Through this exchange, we could truly see how the JSL students are steadily developing their ability to communicate, listen, and interact in Japanese.

We will continue to value learning and connections made through language as we support our students’ growth.
