This summer, AMICUS hosted a special summer school event for non-AMICUS students from the local community!
This is our second summer school, continuing from last year.
The DISCOVERY GROUP, for students in Grades 2–4, welcomed English beginners who may not have had much exposure to English in their daily lives, or who study English but do not often have opportunities to use it. Over three exciting days, they took on a variety of activities while using English along the way!
At first, the children looked a little nervous, feeling that speaking English was a bit scary.
However, as they practiced simple greetings they already knew and introduced themselves and their favorite things using self-introduction cards, they quickly felt at ease and connected with one another♪
During the campus exploration, they even took on the challenge of asking teachers questions using the phrase they had just learned: “Where is the…?”
This time, the children also had the opportunity to try pottery and horseback riding!
For pottery, they first practiced making a simple hand-molded clay container. As they worked, they learned useful English words for the activity and communicated with their teachers in English while coloring their creations.
Then came the main project: making flat-style Shisa! They are now being fired in the kiln. We can’t wait to see the finished Shisa that everyone worked so hard ♪
For the horseback riding experience, the children first learned the English names for different parts of a horse. Then, it was time to actually ride! They were thrilled to experience something completely different from their everyday school life while enjoying learning English.
As they spent more time communicating with their teachers and friends, their nervousness about speaking English gradually faded.
Before long, they were naturally greeting others and asking questions in English!!
At the end of the program, the children presented their creations and shared their favorite memories from the three-day experience in English!
So many conversations, so much laughter, and so many new challenges!
The children were saying, “English is fun! I want to speak more!”
It was a fun-filled summer school where the children took their very first exciting steps into a new English adventure! ✨
