Recently, AMICUS held a “Career Fair” for Grade 6 and Grade 7 students!
We welcomed seven guest speakers who are active in a variety of fields, including personal training, cooking, DJing, firefighting, banking, IT engineering, and research and support at OIST.

Personal Trainer – Mr. Tanahara
Mr. Tanahara talked about running a personal training gym and supporting people who experience physical changes due to a lack of exercise, as well as athletes and professional athletes!
Students also had the chance to move their bodies and learn about how their bones and muscles work.
Mr. Tanahara also shared the importance of constantly trying new things and creating unique value when running a business.

Chef – Mr. Maekawa
Mr. Maekawa talked about the joy of making people happy through food and the appeal of working as a chef.
Students learned that enjoying food is about more than just taste. They explored how our sense of smell, sight, and touch also play an important role as well as the attention to detail that professional chefs put into their cooking.
It was a great opportunity for students to discover the depth and enjoyment of food in our everyday lives! Mr. Maekawa’s special broth was delicious.

DJ – Mr. Bolton
Mr. Bolton shared his passion for music and introduced students to the world of DJing while pursuing his studies at university.
Students listened to a song made by combining a beat used at an actual music festival with a singer’s vocals, giving them a chance to experience the fun of music production.
It was an inspiring experience that showed students the importance of continuing to explore and challenge themselves in areas they are interested in and passionate about!

Firefighter – Ms. Asato
Ms. Asato introduced students to the important work of firefighters who help keep our communities safe, sharing some of her own experiences on the job.
Students learned about the daily training firefighters do, the preparation needed to respond to different situations, and the strong sense of responsibility that comes with the job.
It also touched upon their strong sense of duty to protect making it a valuable learning experience for the students.

Bank Employee | The Bank of Okinawa – Ms. Tamaki
Ms. Tamaki explained how money works and the role that banks play in our everyday lives.
As an AMICUS graduate, she also shared how she used her favorite English to study abroad and learn more about the world. She talked about how she chose her current career so that she could use her strengths while contributing to her local community in Okinawa.

IT Engineer | American Engineering Corporation – Mr. Potter and Mr. Gordon
Mr. Potter and Mr. Gordon introduced students to the IT engineers and how they support many things we use every day, including Wi-Fi, PA system, and electronic displays.
Mr. Potter also talked about his work as an interpreter, connecting Japanese customers with foreign engineers at American Engineering Corporation. Students were excited to learn how English and IT skills can be used to work in a global environment!

Researcher | OIST – Mr. Madeo
Mr. Madeo introduced students to the diverse research happening at OIST (Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology), a global hub for scientists from around the world.
He emphasized the power of curiosity and research, as well as the resilience and patience needed to navigate trial and error.
Through his talk, students discovered the true joy and sense of accomplishment that come from dedicated research and new discoveries.
This Career Fair provided students with the opportunity to learn about a wide range of careers and ways of life. They also had the chance to think about how their own interests and passions can connect to work and society.
We hope that these valuable experiences and encounters will inspire our students to think about their own futures!
