前回に引き続き、久米島離島体験2日目のご報告をしたいと思います。
2日目は朝から晩まで盛りだくさんの一日となりました。
Continuing from where we left off…
The second day of the Kumejima School Trip was fun and full of learning activities.

午前6時半に起床し、みんなでおいしい朝ごはんをたっぷり食べて
いざ久米島ホタル館へ出発です！
The students woke up at 6:30 am and had a nice full breakfast and headed out to the Kumejima Firefly Museum – Kumejima Hotarukan.


久米島ホタル館では、リバーウォッチングをしました。
直接川に入って、水や泥の感触を楽しんだり、実際に生きものを発見し、
エビや魚を網で捕獲するワクワク感を体験できました。
At Kumejima Hotarukan, the students participated in an activity called the “river watching”. They went into the river and enjoyed the feeling of water and mud, captured living creatures such as insects, prawns, crabs and fishes. The students were able to experience the thrill of catching live creatures.


その後、みんなで採取し見つけた生きもの達を詳しく観察し、
解説してもらい、新しいことをたくさん学ぶことができました。
Once the students came back from the river, they observed and learned about the living creatures they captured from the nature guide. They were able to learn many new things from this activity.


久米島ホタル館を後にすると、お待ちかねのお昼休憩です！
お天気が良かったので、みんなで外で久米島そばをいただきました。
After the river watching, it is the long-awaited lunch time!
Since it was a very nice weather the student had lunch outside. Yummy yummy Kumejima Soba 🙂



さて、次に向かったのはお化け坂と呼ばれるとっても不思議な坂道。
一見すると、ただの上り坂のように見える坂道なのですが、
坂の途中でバスのギアをニュートラルに入れると、
あら不思議、ゆっくりとバスが坂を上り始めてしまいます。
逆側から見ても同じで、下り坂に見えるのに、実際に通ってみると上っている。
いわゆる目の錯覚を利用した坂道なのです。
まるでお化けに押されているかのようだ 、ということで
お化け坂と呼ばれるようになったとかなかったとか。
なぜそのように見えるのか実際にバスを降りて、ホイールを転がしてみたり、
地面などを観察してみたり、各々が現場検証を行いました。
Next, the students headed to a very mysterious slope called the “Ghost Slope”, Obakezaka. It seems like a normal upward slope just by looking, but when put the bus in neutral magically the bus　will start to roll “up” the slope. It was actually a downward slope. It is a trick to the eye. It is said that it seems as if a ghost is pushing the bus, that is why it is called the “Ghost Slope”?!
The students got off the bus and did an “on the spot investigation” to figure out the reason of the optical illusion by rolling things down the hill and observing the road.

これはどうやら道路の脇に生えている木々が斜めに生えていることや、
まわりの地形や坂の勾配などいろいろな要素が組み合わさって
このような不思議な現象が起きるとのことでした。
The trees growing obliquely and the shape of the layout of the surrounding landscape seems to create the mysterious phenomenon.

次に、久米島高校園芸科の子どもたちになすとピーマンの収穫方法や
ハウス栽培などについて教わりました。
The students visited the Gardening Department of Kumejima High School. The students learned from the high school students how to harvest green peppers and eggplants and how the vegetables and fruits grow in the green house.


その後、ロサンゼルス在住で久米島高校出身のCGクリエーター
糸数弘樹さんとスカイプでお話をしました。
糸数さんはアカデミー賞を受賞した「アナと雪の女王」の
城や周りの森の背景などを制作したそうです。
CG制作のおもしろみやなぜCGクリエーターになったのかなど
とても興味深いお話を聞くことができました。
お話した後は、糸数さんのお弟子さんたちである久米島高校のCG部の
生徒さんたちに実際にパソコンを使ってCGの制作方法を教えてもらいました。
みんな食い入るように画面を見つめていました。
Also, the students had the chance to talk to Mr. Hiroki Itokazu, a CGI artist from Kumejima over skype. Mr. Itokazu worked on the castles and the forest in the background of the animated film “Frozen” which won the Academy Awards. He talked to the students about the interesting aspects of Computer Graphics and how he chose to be a CGI artist. After they talked with Mr. Itokazu, the high school students from the CGI club actually showed AMICUS students how to create CGI. They seemed really interested and couldn’t get their eyes off the computer!



たくさんお勉強した後は、夕飯の時間です！
久米島ホタル館に戻り、自分たちで収穫したばかりの
なすとピーマンを調理してカレーのトッピングとしていただきました。
みんなもりもり食べて、おかわりもたくさんしていました。
採れたて新鮮の野菜を味わえてよかったですね！
After we learned a lot from the high school students, it is finally dinner time! The students went back to Kumejima Firefly Museum – Kumejima Hotarukan and cooked the vegetables they just harvested for the curry rice. Everyone had a big plate of curry rice 🙂

ごはんの後は、 ネイチャービンゴで森を散策したり、学習したことを発表して
最後に夜の川や沼、そしてホタルを観察しました。
天気があまり良くなかったのでホタルが見られるか心配でしたが、
夜の闇に輝く美しいホタルの光を見ることができました！
（残念ながら写真は撮れませんでした。。。）
Once the students finished dinner, they played nature bingo and went out to capture insects and plants and also did a presentation about their experience for the day. And at the very last, they were able to go out and see the beautiful lights of the fireflies blinking in the dark. (Could not take any pictures… Sorry)

普段の生活ではなかなか出来ない貴重な体験ができたのではないでしょうか。
とにかくたくさん動いて、たくさん学習をした一日となりました！
The 2nd Day of the school trip was filled with opportunities to enjoy the nature to the fullest. It was a day of lots of fun and learning!
