Learning About Local History and Life

The 3rd graders at Okinawa AMICUS International have been learning about Uruma City through many activities in social studies.

They walked around Midorimachi, crossed the Kaichu Road, and visited islands. They also listened to stories from local people at the Yakena Community Center about how life was in the past.On Friday, June 13th, they went on a field trip to Katsuren Castle Ruins, Amawari Park, and Uruma Marche. At Katsuren Castle, they saw the stone walls, sacred places (Utaki), and wells (Kaa). At Amawari Park, they learned more about Amawari’s life using dioramas, timelines, and anime videos.

In the afternoon, they visited Uruma Marche and bought local products like mozuku bread, carrot soda, and sunflowers. The students learned about “local production for local consumption” by buying directly from farmers.

Through these experiences, the students learned more about Uruma City’s history and culture. They will continue learning and become supporters of their local area!
