“We Are Kind By…” —How Children See Kindness

As I walk around the campus, I often encounter many small yet moving moments.

The other day, I came across a board in the Grade 1 area titled “We are kind by…”.

On it were sentences written by students, expressing in English what kindness means to them:

I can be kind by helping someone.

I can be kind by saying sorry.

I can be kind by sharing toys.

I can be kind by saying hello.

I can be kind by smiling.

Each phrase reflects the children’s pure and gentle hearts.

The purpose of coming to school is not only to gain knowledge.

It is equally important to learn how to respect others, express our feelings in words, and nurture a rich sense of empathy and sensitivity.

I was deeply moved by the teachers’ idea of asking first graders, “What does it mean to be kind?” and letting them express their thoughts in English.

I was also impressed by how the children saw kindness — not only as helping others or sharing toys, but also as saying “Good morning,” apologizing, or simply smiling. Their understanding of kindness truly touched my heart.

Standing in front of this board, I found myself wishing once again that our AMICUS students will continue to grow into compassionate and caring individuals.

And I believe this is not only the wish of the Grade 1 teachers, but of all AMICUS teachers and staff — and of you, our parents as well.

As we begin the second semester, I renew my own determination to make AMICUS a place filled with the children’s smiles and kindness.
